Dominican Independence - PART-A-A-A-A-Y-Y-Y!

Yes, it's that time again! 27th February and 'Independence Day' in the Dominican Republic. As we have tried to summarize on the main site, http://www.visiting-the-dominican-republic.com,
it may not have been an easy ride since that day back in 1844 when General Pedro Santana was proclaimed the first President of the new Dominican Republic. Although Dominican Republic history has been chequered since that time - just now, in 2006, it may be that this Caribbean gem of a country is finally putting its problems into the past, and has a healthy future to look forward to!

Although times have not been easy for many ordinary Dominicans over the last few years - especially with the need for some tough economic measures to be applied in order for the current Government to pull the country back from the brink of bankruptcy (the legacy of the previous 'gangster' regime!) - it is now the case that the Dominican Republic is benefitting from huge investment, as it makes steady progress towards becoming the latest 'luxury destination' in the Caribbean.

The shaky period that the Dominican Republic experienced back in the early/mid nineteen-nineties when, for a time, tourism entrepreneurs made the questionable choice to become the 'Benidorm' of the Caribbean, seems to have been consigned to the past. Those days of shoddy quality hotels, poor service and 'food poisoning' did a good deal of damage to the destinations budding reputation as a serious tropical tourism contender. But in this new millennium the accent, as far as tourism development goes, has been on quality and luxury. With the latest developments in the Dominican Republic set to number amongst some of the best of the luxury Caribbean resorts, the country is set to have more than merely Independence to celebrate in the years to come.

With Independence Day also comes one of the Dominican Republic's biggest and best Carnivals, which will be passing along George Washington Avenue - otherwise 'El Malecon' - in Santo Domingo City itself! A great time is sure to be had by locals and tourists alike as the celebrations and the procession winds its 'well-oiled' way through the area known as 'the planet's biggest disco'!!

Congratulations - Dominican Republic! Let's drink to the hope that, at last, your time has really come!

No longer 'Gone'...but 'Back with the wind!' ;-)

Sorry for the recent 'radio silence' but now we've been blown back online here at the 'Manana Syndrome'...to announce the 'official' beginning of the 'hurricane season' in the Dominican Republic.

Last year was a pretty busy 'season' with hurricanes 'Ivan' and 'Jeanne' probably getting most media coverage, but 'Charley' and 'Frances' also made themselves particularly 'felt' in the Caribbean region, although the DR suffered less than some areas. In fact 'Ivan' and 'Charley' were some of the most destructive storms ever on the US mainland.

Although we hope it will be a safe year for all visitors, some experts are already saying that the current atmospheric conditions are akin to one of the most turbulent periods in 'hurricane' history - the 1930's!

Sources note that the South Coast areas of the DR are considered most at risk if the storms should 'buzz' the Island.

Most years, although the so-called 'season' begins around this time it is towards the end of the 182 day period that the greatest risk of tropical cyclones usually occurs - during later September, October and November. Nonetheless, make sure you take a look at the weather forecast for the DR before you depart and ensure you acquaint yourself with any procedures, once there, if storms are expected whilst you are in resort.

Besides the 'Sprit of Hope' award for the work he has done with the 4.40 group, he also recived an award for his fabulous recording 'Para ti', and yet another for 'Best Christian Album'.

If you are visiting the DR during the second half of April then there are numerous interesting artistic and cultural events occurring, here are a few ideas:

Until 23 April you can still catch the impressive exhibition of highly regarded Spanish artist Joseph Gausachs. Although originally from Barcelona, Gausachs lived and taught in the Dominican Republic for years, and consequently influenced numerous Dominican artists who are now well known in their own right. His work can be seen free of charge at Centro Cultural de Españã. Arzobispo Meriño corner Arzobispo Portes. More information (in Spanish) http://www.ccesd.org

Through April to June 2005 you can see ‘Que no me quiten lo pintao’ a wonderful selection of artworks with the theme of Merengue. On display at the Cultural Centre in Santiago de los Caballeros you can find out more about this feast of Dominican Arts and Culture, and many other events, at http://www.centroleon.org.do (in Spanish).

16 April 2005 – ‘Pop’ goes the Fiesta Hall at Jaragua, when Belinda the ‘teen pop sensation’ from Mexico finally appears in the ‘Party on the Roof’ (Fiesta en la Azotea) event originally scheduled for March 18!

21 April 2005 – One for the ‘grown ups’ when in the spirit of ‘Fostering Progress, Collaboration and Exchange’ epithet of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (see: http://www.globalfoundationdd.org/) a talk by Dr. Allan Fisher (President of iCarnegie) will be presented at Las Americas Institute of Technology (ITLA) – dealing with technology education and its role in providing opportunities for Industry...Evidently not to be missed if you are on holiday ;-)

Also commencing 21 April and running till May 1st 2005 for anyone who has neglected to ring enough holiday reading material with them...the International Book fair of Santo Domingo will be running in the grounds of the Plaza de la Cultura. The book fair theme this year is Italy...so at least Columbus should be happy!

22 April through to 22 June if it is pictures rather than books that inspire you then you should look out for the exhibition of exhilarating photography by Yann Arthurs-Bertrand, the noted French photographer. Arthurs-Bertrand’s show includes one hundred images of the Earth in aerial view from many points around the globe. Sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and of Environment and Culture, the City of Santo Domingo and APEC University. The Independence Park in the Zona Colonial is the venue for this stunning exhiblition.

22 April – An opportunity to do two things at once at the Cultural Centre in Santiago de los Caballeros when, having visited the exhibition (see above,) you can then go on to enjoy Pablo Milanes, a singer/songwriter from Cuba who be providing musical entertainment – free of charge!

22/23 April 2005 – The Florida-Dominican Business Development Group presents the first “Dominican Tourism Investment and Real Estate Fair” at the Radisson Convention Centre. Dominican Republic on FIRE!

Weeks of dry weather have resulted in 'tinder-dry' conditions in the Dominican Republic.

Heat building up in natural humus, and inadequate precautions taken by small farmers employing 'slash-and-burn' techniques have possibly been causative factors in setting off devastating forest fires in the central mountainous forest regions, and elsewhere.

The fires have been burning for nearly two weeks and local fire-fighting teams have made little impact. The rising smoke can be seen on photos taken by a NASA satellite a week or so ago and shown here:

NASA Observatories state that "March is typically the driest month in the Dominican Republic, but an exceptionally dry winter may have increased the fire hazard. The dry season usually runs from December to May for most of the island, but the first three months of 2005 were even drier than normal..."

The DR Government is seeking international assistance to stop the fires which have also broken out on Los Haitises and Villa Altagracia. The fires threaten to destroy the already much reduced forested areas. At least 16 separate fires are reported to be burning at this moment across the Island.
